Earlier this week, the Medusa ransomware group announced its involvement in a cyberattack on the Tarrant County Appraisal District that occurred in March. They have issued a threat to publish 218GB of confidential data unless their demand for a $100,000 ransom is met within six days.
The Tarrant County Appraisal District, responsible for assessing property values in Fort Worth, Texas, disclosed that personal details of about 300 individuals were compromised. Jon Don Bobbitt, the district's chief appraiser, released a statement on March 21, 2024, confirming the breach. "We experienced a network disruption and have since taken measures to secure our network. We are collaborating with top cybersecurity experts to manage the investigation and restore our systems," he explained.
The district has committed to notifying affected individuals to help them safeguard their personal information and advises everyone to report any unusual activity immediately. Although the attack has been reported to the FBI and efforts to resume normal operations are ongoing, there has been no word from county officials on whether the ransom will be paid.
